2 Kinds Of Concrete Sealants

About Me
How Concrete Is That?

When someone describes an idea or action as "concrete," they generally mean that action is permanent or stable. Of course, that meaning is derived from the fact that concrete itself is really hard and stable. This is why, over the years, concrete has become such an in-demand material. It's used to make everything from the biggest skyscrapers to the smallest of patio pavers. What other material could be so versatile? We hope to bring more attention to that versatility as we write about concrete and contractors on this blog. As our readers, you can enjoy the content and let us know how we're doing.

2 Kinds Of Concrete Sealants

Concrete floors can be a really good choice for just about any building. There are a lot of reasons why you might want to have concrete floors in your building, including using underfloor heaters and using the concrete as a thermal heating source. No matter why you choose to have concrete floors installed, you need to make sure that you have your floor sealed. Concrete has issues with being porous, and things can get into your floor and damage it. Sealing or coating your concrete will protect your floor and help to keep it stronger and in good shape longer. So, what are some of the coatings that you can use on your concrete floor?

Acrylic Sealants

These sealants are one of the more common choices. That's because they can be put on the floors relatively soon after the concrete has been laid. An acrylic sealant is also pretty quick and easy to use on the floor. These sealants tend to be thinner than other sealants, which is part of what makes them easier to put on the floor. They are a good choice to use in places where there is a high risk of water getting in, or where a lot of UV light will be since many acrylic sealants are resistant to UV light. If you have colored or patterned concrete, an acrylic sealant can be a good choice since it will also enhance the color. These coatings aren't as durable as some others, so you will need to reapply them more often and not use them in high-traffic spots.

Silicone Sealants

While these sealants work well for their purpose, they are fairly temporary. They need to be applied much more frequently. You most often see silicone sealants used on walls or other vertical surfaces that need to be cleaned frequently. One place that a silicone sealant gets used frequently is on walls that are prone to graffiti. The sealant will help to make sure that the paint from the graffiti doesn't penetrate into the concrete by penetrating deeply into the concrete instead, blocking the places where the spray paint could get in. On top of having a short life, these sealants generally aren't UV resistant, so they aren't great for horizontal surfaces outside.

If you have a concrete floor or other surfaces in your house, you should make sure that you get it sealed. There are all kinds of sealants that you can choose to have installed.
